LavaFlow AI

LavaFlow AI is an independent research concept exploring how artificial intelligence and geospatial data can support the analysis of volcanic lava-flow behavior and disaster planning. The project is being designed around terrain and Earth-observation data to investigate ways of identifying and modeling areas that may be affected by lava flows while supporting clearer visualization of potential risk.

Why I Created It

The idea for LavaFlow AI came after attending a geology talk in Hawaiʻi before visiting Kīlauea. Learning more about volcanic landscapes and how lava movement is influenced by terrain led me to explore whether AI and geospatial modeling could contribute to better understanding of potential flow behavior and support future disaster-planning decisions.

How I Built It

The project is currently in the research and planning phase. The proposed approach combines digital elevation models, historical geospatial data, and machine-learning-based spatial analysis to study lava-flow patterns and potential risk areas. Initial experimentation is planned around Kīlauea using Python-based geospatial and deep-learning workflows, while the full modeling methodology is being kept private as the research direction is developed.
